Chicago Sky star Angel Reese’s resurfaced take on the Rookie of the Year race got WNBA fans talking after Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark claimed the prestigious award.
Angel Reese’s comments on the Rookie of the Year race that resurfaced after Caitlin Clark’s victory have caused a stir among WNBA fans.
The Indiana Fever guard has been unanimously voted the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year by the Associated Press after a historic campaign that saw her average 19.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 8.4 assists while breaking several league records. Reese put up a fight, registering never-seen-before rebounding numbers with 13.1 boards per game in addition to 13.6 points.
Both Clark and Reese insisted they didn’t care much about the award despite what appeared to be a heated rivalry between the two standout rookies, though. “I think you guys have made the big thing. We haven’t,” the Chicago Sky forward said back in late August.
“We both want to win. We’ve been wanting to win and that’s what we’ve done in our collegiate career.
“We played against each other last year and the year before in the March Madness tournament. So we’re just trying to do whatever it takes to win. That’s what’s important right now.”
A significant number of WNBA fans celebrate both rising basketball stars after the comments resurfaced. “People need to stop hating on both Reese and Clark. They’re both phenomenal players,” one wrote.
Another agreed with Reese that the drama over the Rookie of the Year chase was blown out of proportion. “It’s the stans that make it something far more than what it is,” the fan said.
“Real basketball fans like both players for what they bring to the game. And that’s me saying that, as a Sky fan.” And a third simply added, “Both are very good players that bring different things to the game and lets leave it at that.”
However, some thought that Reese desired individual accolades more than she admitted, bringing up the “stat-padding” accusations from earlier in the season. “We all know that Reese is being dishonest when she said she didn’t care about ROTY,” one fan wrote.
